Rapid Testing
Our HIV Testing is:
- Confidential
- Oral (no blood involved); and
- Rapid (same day results, before you leave the Clinic).
We also offer our clients confidential HIV counseling and linkages.
What to expect
Our HIV Risk Assessment and Testing Counselors provide a space where women can openly discuss questions, concerns, or fears they may have involving HIV, testing, substance use, sexual behavior, and a number of other HIV-related topics.
The counselor will first lead the client to a private room to obtain consent for the testing, to give a brief overview of how the test works, and to have the client take the test. We use OraQuick Advance Rapid Tests, which use just a bit of oral fluid or a tiny drop of blood to test for HIV antibodies. Clients who have taken this test often say that this is the easiest specimen collection they have ever had.
The client and counselor then discuss how HIV is transmitted, what behaviors may put the client at risk for transmission, appropriateness for testing, and how the client can modify certain behaviors to lower her risk for HIV exposure. In order to ensure our clients’ confidentiality, no names are attached to test specimens, risk assessment forms, or test results. We only release results that are confirmed positive. These results are released to the city and state departments of public health, not to the federal government.
After this discussion, the counselor retrieves the client’s results from our lab area and the client leaves knowing her current HIV status. If the client would like referrals for other HIV or STI testing, Hepatitis vaccinations, needle exchanges, or other services that can help her lower her risk for HIV transmission, her counselor can find appropriate resources for her.
