Birth control puts you in charge. It allows you to plan the timing of your pregnancies, as well as prevent pregnancy if you don’t want to be pregnant.
If you want to prevent pregnancy, there are many different options. Only abstinence is perfect at preventing pregnancy. The other methods have varying levels of protection and some also have other great benefits aside from pregnancy prevention. Without using any method, 90% of sexually active women will be pregnant within a year.
You should choose which method is best for you based on your preferences, beliefs, health, budget, and the failure rate acceptable to you. We can help you understand each methods so that you feel comfortable with your choice.
One site that compares the different birth control methods that we really like is Bedsider. Click on the chart below to see which birth control methods are rated most effective. We offer all the options listed in this chart, except for sterilization, but we can help you find a provider who does offer this service.
In partnership with UCSF and the folks at Bedsider, we just started to use a new, interactive iPad app to help our clients figure out what method might be best for them. When you check in at the front desk, you will be offered an iPad with this tool that goes over all the methods and the pluses and minuses of each of them.
