Introducing Primary Care Services

August 28, 2014

As previously reported, in January, 2014, the Clinic began offering care for everything from unexpected aches, to routine physicals, to care for colds or chronic conditions like asthma and diabetes—right here in the same community-based environment our clients have come to know and trust. These primary care services are an addition to the comprehensive reproductive health services we’ve always offered. And now, primary care visits are even covered by some forms of Medi-Cal.

“By providing these essential services along with women’s health care in one familiar location, we can care for each woman as a whole person with a range of physical, sexual, and mental health needs that are often closely related,” says Dr. Ana Valdés, the Clinic’s new Consulting Primary Care Medical Director. Dr. Valdés joined the Clinic team in December 2013 after many years as the Medical Director at St. Anthony’s Medical Clinic in San Francisco.

Our community asked, and we answered:

1 in 4 Western Addition survey respondents listed the emergency room as their primary source of care, and only 6-9% of respondents received preventive care in the past year. Our clients listed mental health and primary care among their top health needs (Women’s Community Clinic Needs Assessment, 2012).

Feedback from clients has been overwhelmingly positive: “We’ve heard for years from our clients that they wish they could come to us for all of their health care needs, and now they can,” says Lisa Mihaly, Primary Care Program Clinician. “No woman should have to go without affordable and accessible medical care for easily treatable conditions like flus, or chronic care conditions like asthma and diabetes.” Now we have made this access a reality for clients who walk through our doors or people in our community who need our help.
